It's a common misconception that all transients or surges are generated from events occurring outside the facility. Only 20% of the transients are resulted from external sources such as lightning strikes and utility grid switching. The remaining 80% are caused by events occurring inside of the facility. There are many electrical devices by their design generate harmful transient or surges that corrupt, degrade and/or destroy surrounding sensitive electronics. Variable frequency drives, power-factor correction capacitors, HVAC and electronic lighting ballasts are some of the common sources of internally generated transients. The frequency and extent of the damages depend on the size and source of the transients.
A comprehensive layered scheme is the best way to provide the facility-wide surge protection. Understanding the intended applications and the nature of the loads the TVSS is protecting is first step in selecting the correct type and level of surge protection you need for your facility.
